Description of the plot
Situated in the heart of Condroz in the province of Liège, at an altitude of 230 metres, the plot of land at Hamoir was previously occupied by a plantation of mature Douglas fir and spruce. The final trees at the site were harvested in 2018. In 2019, the 2.3-hectare plot was fenced off to protect future plantings from the nibbling of roe deer and the enthusiasm of wild boar, which live to dig up young seedlings. The soil at this plot is stony loam, deep, well-drained and slightly acidic, making it potentially suitable for a wide range of species. 7 species for the future were selected to plant on the plot. On the Eastern section of the land, Mediterranean softwoods have been planted: Atlas cedar, which originates in the mountains of North Africa, Nordmann pine, from the Caucasus, Turkish fir and Corsican black pine.
The Western section of the plot features 3 species of oak: Sessile oak, which is native to our region and Hairy Oak and Downy oak, which both come from the South of France. Planting was carried out during the winter of 2019-2020 after the surface grinding of the remnants from felling the Douglas fir.
